Starting all over again has been humbling but not discouraging. Moving away from my home and business in Alabama was very difficult. What I miss the most are the relationships I have left behind. This morning I received a post on my Facebook wall that reminded me why I love my job so much! "Hope you are all doing well. We miss you SO much-You absolutely can NOT be replaced. It's not everyday you can find a photographer with such talent that also turns out to be such a great friend. I don't think I will ever find another who cares so much about my boys. Love you bunches!!" ~ Catie The message reminded me isn't about being the best photographer or making the most money. It is about the art of capturing beloved memories and the legacies of love they leave behind! It is the connection and the relationships with every client I call friend. It is sharing new miracles with new mommies, crying with those who have lost loved ones, and all the hugs and kisses in between. The Cutest Kid in Lake Havasu

Wow the competition was tough as we had 23 contestants in our Cutest Kid Contest at the Art Walk on Main. It came down to just one vote that separated our first and second place kiddos! Congrats to N. who won the title of this year's contest. Sweet K. came in second place. N. won the grand prize of a custom portrait session and $100 towards her portrait investment. K. will receive a custom session as well. Thanks to everyone for coming down to the Art Walk on Main and voting!

Watch Me Grow

They grow so fast! One of my favorite things about my job is the relationships that are built with the families I photograph. Today I photographed N. for her six month portraits. N's family also relocated here from AL and I have photographed her since she was days old. It had been a little over three months since I had seen her sweet little face and I was eager to hold her. She greeted me with a chubby smile and as I tickled her belly and she gave me a giggle. Wendy, her mommy remarked, " you are the first person outside of the family to make her giggle." It is the connection with each and every client that keeps me inspired to create works of art with their memories. And it is my reward to be a small part of them! Thanks Wendy for sharing sweet little N. with me today!

On the advise of a friend my husband and I decided to bring our 6 day old daughter to Olive You Photography for a newborn session. I am so thrilled that we did! Amber Kaspar has such a gentle, instinctual way with babies. She was able to calm our fussy little one with just a touch and a whisper. Our little girl looked so sweet it brought tears to my eyes! I am looking forward to the next couple of months. We are expecting several newborns in the month of November and I have really enjoyed getting to know the expectant mommies. More Than a Week at the Beach

My heart belongs to my daughter; her smile is what inspires me to see the good in every situation. She is the perfect image of innocence and love. I love experiencing God's creation through her eyes! We spent the last week in Myrtle Beach, SC. Our hotel was located on the beach and we had a lovely view of the ocean from our balcony. Each morning Olivia would jump out of bed, throw the curtains open and proclaim, "There's the Beach!" She approached the sand and waves with caution, the type of respectful fear of knowing that the ocean was much larger than she could imagine. Though she wanted to experience the waves she showed reservation, only adventuring into the water beside her Daddy or myself. We tried to build sand castles, however Olivia found smashing towers to be more thrilling than the building process! The echo of laughter that started deep in her belly as she stepped onto each tower made it a contagious and addictive game. Build it up and knock it down! Each afternoon we would return to our hotel room and try to get rest, but Olivia made rest time into an adventure inspired by her imagination. Our rest times were replaced with: dance parties, pillow fights and tickle times. On our last full day at the beach I noticed that she was starting to get a few freckles on her cheeks, and I remembered a song my great grandpa (which Olivia was born on his birthday) sang to me when I was a little girl, "She's got freckles on her but....she's pretty!" I always would blush thinking he was going to say something naughty, but it was a sweet as it could be. I can't wait to photograph her sweet face, featuring her charming freckles, in honor of my great grandpa's memory and the love reflected in my daughter's face.

I enjoyed getting to know many of the families better and just loved when B. came back to the room and asked, "can you take more pictures of me?" I love spending time with my daughter and in the studio. Today, I was able to do both! She has such a huge heart and imagination. Her favorite game is dress up tea party. So we moved the party to the studio. Her little buddy stopped by to play and well just made her tea party complete. These are the moments that I am going to miss as she grows older. My sweet baby is growing too fast. It truly is bittersweet, when you see how your child has developed before your eyes. Part of me wants to always see her as my little baby, and another is so impresses with her independence. She is my sunshine, and my inspiration. I can't begin to thank God enough for the gift of her sweet spirit. I love you, Pumpkin!

The gifts we're given

Okay I know that I have been a little out of touch over the past couple of weeks. But wow the experiences that I have had over! It all started with a couple of crazy days during bunny sessions where the laughter of children rang throughout the studio. As things began to settle around the studio, my daughter and I packed up and traveled to Kansas City to visit family. While there I had the privilege of staying with my grandmother while she recovered from surgery. Now I say privilege because for many years my grandma has been the all time care taker. As a little girl she had the best remedies for any aliment and then in the past few years she has nursed her husband through his battle with cancer. So it was my blessing to be there for her in her time of need. She is doing well and we were able to attend Easter service together. While in church I noticed a little girl in the row ahead of us holding a small camera. She quietly slipped out of the pew and snapped a few shots of the praise band during worship. I thought there is a photographic artist, in her early years! Ok so I know it seems like I am rambling, but what it all boils down to is that there are so many gifts that we are given and too often we over look them, or we see them as burdens, but when you step back and look at every situation God seems to be working every where! So today or the next as you are going through your daily motions try to recognize the good that God has surrounded you with, it may change your perspective.

In Front of the Camera

Okay so last week I went to a convention to learn how to take better portraits of all my beautiful clients. I had a great time learning new techniques and creative ideas, but one thing I also took from the speaker's presentation was: It is so important to capture the passing moments of my child's life through professional photography, BUT it is also important that I am on the other side of the camera now and then. Wow was this a wake up call, after looking through family photos of Christmas, birthdays, ect I realized there were very few images of me. That may partly be because of my personal insecurity of being on the other side of the camera, but what ever the reason I need to be in those images, for my children. So this weekend I visited some family in Charleston, SC. Though I wanted to take a portrait of my daughter on the beach, the weather didn't permit. So I took the opportunity to have a snapshot of myself and my little girl taken as a keep sake of our trip anyway. I have made a promise to myself and a commitment to my children that will be in photographs. I challenge you to do the same; no matter how photogenic you feel, your children see their mommy as a beautiful princess, and daddy is a super hero, and when they are older they too will cherish photographs of you as the timeless treasures.

We’re looking for cute children ages 18 months to 14 years old to model for a portrait to be entered into the contest.

Models Search Special:
$35 entrance fee, which includes a 30 minute model session and one image submitted to the national gallery.

Finalists will be determined by online votes. Anyone may vote. Each vote is $1, and all proceeds from votes benefit the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. (NILMDTS.org)

The Little Moments

There are times in my life when I feel like I am running in circles, and there never seems to be enough hours in my day. This week has been extremely busy. Tonight I was sitting in my art class drawing a portrait of myself, in a very unconventional style and as I was drawing the song, Open the Eyes of my Heart, kept playing through my head. Which is funny because I was drawing mainly what filled my head as important parts of who I am. I began to hum the tune and it seemed to be the source of my inspiration as I drew. Each aspect of the portrait seemed to flow and what was close to my heart filled the page. I took the entire class drawing and barely started painting, and had to take the painting home to finish. But here is the most amazing part about this: God answered my prayer even through a simple song! I returned home a little after 9 PM. I found my husband sitting on our couch waiting with our daughter soundly sleeping next to him. As I sat next to him she looked up and gave me the warmest smile to welcome me home. I then lifted her from the couch and carried her to her room where I instead of laying her down right away I took a few moments to rock her, back to sleep. Then it hit me! Open the eyes of my heart Lord I want to see you! She snuggled up to me and laid her hand right on my heart. I couldn't stop the tears; the love that I hold for her was so over whelming and I realized God is everywhere especially in our love for our children. He surrounds us with his love and blessings. So I challenge you cherish the little moments and I bet you'll find something so much bigger, you may even get a glimpse of God!

While we have been in our slow season I have been spending a lot of my time thinking about our summer promotions. But I have also been spending time speaking to various Professional Photographers' groups. I spoke in Huntsville last night and it was great to see a few of my friends up there. How will you be remembered?

Today was my grandfather's funeral and unlike what many people imagine funerals to be like: His was truly a celebration. Sure there were countless tears, but often followed by laughter. The most amazing part was that all his life he put God first and so his funeral was started with praise a worship. He spent his life preaching and teaching, and he left behind a legacy of forgiveness and love. It made me wonder how will I be remembered? I hope that I can live up to his legacy and show God's love to all that I encounter. I am very lucky and blessed to meet so many people through my photography. What an honor you all give me to capture your memories. I was given the opportunity to compose a slide show for my grandpa's visitation service. How could I possibly tell such an amazing story of this incredible man in just a few minutes, and then after going through hundreds of photographs of family memories, I was overwhelmed with thoughts of the good ole days! And well just as the old cliche states, "a picture is worth a thousand words," each moment captured in time told its own story and the love legacy he left behind.

The Things That Really Matter

Living hundreds of miles away from my family has been one of my greatest challenges. When I told my husband that I would go to the ends of the Earth for him I never imagined he would move me so far from home. I was comforted by the warm southern hospitality, and the amazing people I met here in AL. Though there are many times when homesickness lingers, especially right now. My grandpa passed this afternoon. Though I miss him terribly and wish I had been there for his final moments; I am comforted knowing he is with our Lord and Savior. He truly was a man to be admired. He always put God first in his life, and even in his weakest moments he always found the strength to make us smile. I have many memories of late night movies and ICE CREAM at grandma and grandpa's. He taught me to ride horses, and to be confident in the Lord. I will be closing the studio through the weekend to be in Kansas City with my family and will resume regular studio hours Tue. Feb. 10th. Thank you for your support and prayers!

This is a very hard process for me because there have been so many cutie pies that have visited the studio! But it is definitely time for some fresh photos. New Year Resolution

At the National Convention for the Professional Photographers of America, Anne Geddes told me that her New Year resolution in 1984 was to become the most well known baby photographer in the World. She then started her studio in her garage at her suburban home, just as I had just two years ago. How encouraging! AND that is only the beginning, Anne began to share about her journey, all her struggles and failures, to becoming the most well know photographer in the world. She attributed her success to her imagination by stating, “I am a professional dreamer!” There was an essence of humility, love, and warmth that filled her voice as the words gracefully streamed from her mouth to my heart, inspiring me to beyond my imagination.
“Little victories achieve big dreams,” she said. Thoughts, ideas, and dreams began to flood my mind as she proceeded. I began to think about my journey with Olive You Photography, and the modest victories that have made it possible to live my dream! I don’t desire to be the most famous photographer in the world, but I want to be able to move someone as much as she has touched me. So, as January is quickly passing, I have finally decided on my New Year resolution: I will depend on creativity, imagination, and love to create beautiful images of life’s most precious moments.

Praise God! I find myself speechless when I think of this inspired moment. It is the little things that God blesses us with daily that we often miss. Those precious moments slip through the hustle of our to do lists. And our to do lists never seem to taper off, we just keep adding tasks one after another. We are doing to be doing what we're always doing. Early last Sat. morning, as I was preparing for this senior session, I looked down the tracks and stood in awe. The soft light shining through the trees illuminated the abandoned tracks, and there in the midst of indifference was a flowering vine. The violet flowers delicately stretched toward the glowing light, longing to be sun kissed. I am reminded that God is our light and our provider, and He he wants us to seek Him among this apathetic world. I want to be like that violet bloom, stretching toward His light to be Son kissed.

M. I am so thankful that we were able to start our session with a moment of worship and praise. I hope your senior year is blessed!

I have spent the last week traveling and visiting family. It really is nice to be able to sit face to face with my loved ones and just visit. Today we visited with my husband's 91 year old grandpa. He shared with me his graduating high school class of 1935 photograph. I admired the beautiful light used by the classic photographer and enjoyed the beauty of each portrait. It is rare to see that skill and art in today's school portraiture. Looking around his room I was reminded the responsibility and privilege I held as a portrait photographer; his walls, dresser and and desk were decorated with family portraiture. A portrait of himself and my husband's grandmother sits to the left of his bed, and portraits of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are what he holds dear. Today after our visit I am encouraged and excited to create beautiful images that can be looked upon and cherished for generations to come.

Gearing up for fall.

Believe it or not Fall is around the corner and the leaves will be changing soon. Autumn is my favorite season of the year. There is something about the warm colors and that crisp fall air. It brings back childhood memories of sitting by a wood burning fire and snuggling in a blanket. And of course FOOTBALL!

Oh to be two again

My little girl will turn two in a couple of weeks and we went out and played "fairy princess." She was more interested in the water than posing for her two year old portraits, but I love the natural look anyway! I can't believe two years has past; I remember the excitement preparing for her arrival. And now she is trying to be as independent as possible. Trying to dress herself, read me stories and brushing her teeth. Oh but I still have those sweet moments just before she falls asleep when all she wants is mommy to hold her. You know I am cherishing every little moment, because they will be gone too soon.

I am so excited about this Christmas season. One of my all time favorite childhood memories is sitting on Santa's lap asking for a million ball gowns. Yes even then I was very ambitious! Santa has taken time out of his busy schedule for portraits with your child. You could wait in line at the mall and get your standard snap shot....
